Some things to do when setting up a new machine:

• Write down all the info for the inventory database:
  • Service Tag/Serial number
  • Manufacturer and model number
  • Number and speed of physical CPUs
  • Amount of memory
  • Number and size of disks

• Laptops should register with CSE
  • Choose "Portable - Laptop" for device
  • Check the "This is private equipment" box (actually, it is just non-CSE)

• If it needs a UW inventory tag, bring the machine to Monika
• Check the BIOS for AC Power boot
• Use factory OS or install OS (probably Red Hat with KickStart)
• Put all the details in the inventory database
• Add it to "ou=machines" in LDAP
• If desired, do a burn-in test of RAM with memtest86 and disk with bonnie++
