Alternatives to OS X 10.5's application firewall

     3In 10.5, the default firewall on Mac OS X has been replaced with an [http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1810 application firewall]. 
     4Instead of opening or closing access on a port by port basis, the application firewall 
     5requires the user to specify access on a per application basis. 
     6This change can produce obstacles for software developers and may be confusing to more advanced users. 
     7Previous to 10.5, the default firewall was ipfw. 
     8Ipfw is still available on OS X and may be re-enabled by manually defining a set of firewall rules using 
     9a text editor and creating a script to run ipfw at system start-up.

     11An alternative to writing the script of rules by hand is to install a GUI front-end to ipfw.
